1999 (Art Collection Deutsche Börse), 2015 Launch of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation

Number of artworks:
2,000

Status of collection:
International

Artistic domain:

The Art Collection Deutsche Börse is among the most important international collections of contemporary photography. Established in 1999, the collection currently comprises around 2,000 by over 130 artists from 27 nations and is continuously growing. It is dedicated to a variety of central themes of photography from the mid-20th century onward and includes well-known names as well as new and rediscovered works.

The inclusion of extensive work groups of documentary and reportage photography in the collection serves to show that the production of museum-quality work does not happen for the art market or museum walls alone. What all works have in common, however, is that they convey the artists' exploration and contemplations of the "conditio humana", the condition of human existance and of people's ways of adapting to their environment.

Profile of the company:

Deutsche Börse AG, operator of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, is one of the largest exchange organizations in the world. The limited company was founded in Frankfurt am Main in 1993 after several medium-sized enterprises merged to form the Deutsche Börse Group, which currently employs approximately 6,700 staff members in numerous locations throughout Europe and maintains representative offices across the globe.

Deutsche Börse Group has been a major sponsor of contemporary photography since 1999 by establishing Art Collection Deutsche Börse, which today comprises about 2,000 works from around 130 international artists.

In late summer 2015 the Deutsche Börse group transferred its photo art-related activities to a foundation, the "Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation". The objective of the Frankfurt-based non-profit organisation is to promote contemporary photography. This is Deutsche Börse's approach to making its commitment to cultural activities permanent. The foundation activities remain focussed on collecting, exhibiting and promoting contemporary photography.
