Clare Goodwin - At the Scale of Living
Clare Goodwin’s work engages with the domestic space as a site of social ideas, memories and patterns of behaviour. At the centre of the exhibition At the Scale of Living is a platform that functions both as a stage and as an island. On it, objects from the sphere of living and dwelling are brought together: familiar in appearance, yet arranged in new and estranged constellations.
The stage becomes a place where social relations, habits and forms of living together become visible. Goodwin’s works move between familiarity and irritation: she takes objects from interiors, deconstructs them and reconfigures them at a one-to-one scale. In doing so, she asks how existing spaces, materials and objects shape our thinking and social behaviour — and how they can be read and interpreted anew as charged signs.
Fragments of everyday life condense into imagined propositions, in which domestic forms, memories and culturally shaped systems of order come together.
Clare Goodwin (*1973 in Birmingham, United Kingdom) has lived and worked in Zurich since 2001. Through her long-standing engagement with interiors and everyday objects, she brings together painting, ceramic works and assemblages to create spatial environments. Her work explores culturally shaped systems of dwelling, living together and reinterpreting them as utopian social projections.
