PCAI Tilos Artist Residency: Hypercomf & The New Raw

An innovative artist in residence program on environment and sustainability, on the island of Tilos in Greece

Polygreen Culture & Art Initiative (PCAI) inaugurates its artist residency on the island of Tilos with artists Hypercomf and designer duo The New Raw. The artist-in-residence program, curated by Kika Kyriakakou, is dedicated to artistic creativity and alternative practices in relation to circular economy, sustainability, upcycling, and environmental protection. Hypercomf and The New Raw’s interdisciplinary projects combine research, design, methodology and education with artistic practices. Their projects, aligned with ecology and environmental awareness, often incorporate sustainable and circular economy methods at their core.

During their three-month residency, the artists will have the opportunity to research further the circular economy program implemented on the island, discover more about its waste management and sorting system and create original artworks and design items from non-recyclable and reusable materials collected daily at the Tilos Center for Circular Innovation. The two creative duos intend to engage further with the local community, its history and the crafts and folklore customs of the island. Through open studio days and educational workshops for islanders, tourists and children, the resident artists wish to examine and discuss further environmental protection in relation to creative methodologies.

PCAI Tilos Artist Residency is organised in the context of Polygreen’ s collaboration with the Municipality of Tilos. Just Go Zero Tilos is an innovative environmental project aiming to develop solutions that promote circular economy and sustainability. Through three main pillars that include education, waste collection and management Tilos intends to become the first zero waste island in Greece.

PCAI founder and director and Polygreen CEO Athanasios Polychronopoulos, notes: “We are truly excited as art becomes the culmination of our comprehensive waste management program, which is being implemented with unprecedented success on the island of Tilos.”

PCAI artistic director and artist residency curator, Kika Kyriakakou, states: The objective of our artist-in-residence program is to explore possible environmental solutions using contemporary art and design as vehicles, in collaboration with the local community and with absolute respect for the history and cultural heritage of Tilos.”
