About the symposium
What happens when art meets science, technology and health? And what can these encounters teach us about the way we create, live and care for one another?

In Common Threads: When Art Meets STEM & Health brings together artists, scientists, technologists, researchers and cultural professionals to explore the increasingly fluid boundaries between artistic practice, scientific enquiry and human wellbeing.

The morning session focuses on The Art in STEAM — the creative possibilities that emerge when art intersects with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) practices. From artificial intelligence to new forms of digital and scientific research, technology is transforming not only what we make, but how we understand knowledge, creativity and authorship. What happens when artists and scientists work across disciplines? And how might these encounters open new ways of seeing, questioning and imagining the future?

The afternoon turns to Art & Health, exploring the role of creativity, art and the environments we inhabit in shaping our physical and mental wellbeing. From hospitals and places of care to gardens, cities and public spaces, the settings around us influence how we feel, connect and recover. How can art contribute to wellbeing, support healing and alleviate experiences of pain, trauma or isolation? What can a growing body of research in this field tell us about the relationship between creativity, environment and health?

Across both sessions, In Common Threads explores the connections between disciplines that are too often considered separately — asking how art can act as a catalyst for collaboration, a bridge between different forms of knowledge and a powerful lens through which to imagine more human-centred futures.
